Hi there
Can anyone advise me whether you can get inflammation in the spine from the R.A?
I have had some inflammation pain in the centre of the spine for a couple of weeks, it is quite painful, I have never had it before.
Just had some bloods tests done this week and my CRP is 50 which seems really high for just inflammation in one part of the spine and nowhere else. Has anyone else had this and does anyone know if I can have a steroid injection in the spine to calm it down?

As far as I know RA spares the spine. At least that's what I've read in text books, but then they don't always tally with what real people with RA say. Personally I get intense pain in my lower back sometimes, usually on waking in the morning. I don't know if it's RA or something else altogether. I hope your pain subsides soon. I know you have to be on your guard with the internet, I found this link which you may find of some help in the first instance. I remember in the early days of RA when I was having my bloods carried out at the hospital the nurse told me she had rheumatoid in the spine.

Thank you so much for your helpful reply Naomi and the link on rheumatoid in the spine Julia. I will have to ring Rheumatology on Monday because my back is getting more painful and it feels red hot, you could cook an egg on it!!!

Hi Rebecca, when I was at my worst with R.A. I had a very acute pain in one spot on my spine. I have heard that ra does not affect the spine as Naomi said but am totally convinced that mine was inflamation and ra related. I believe that juvenile ra can often begin with hotness and inflamation on the spine. I remember being sent a poster from the nras about it and gave it to my surgery to put up, to make people more aware.
Keep us posted with how you get on, my daughter is suffering with a very bad back at the mo having a job to get about, its horrible. Hope you get sorted soon, Zena.

Hi Rebecca Rheumatoid is a systemic disease which can affect any part of the body including the spine. With the spine it is more commonly the cervical spine into the neck that is affected but not necessarily restricted to this area. Here is a useful link. Steroid injections can be used but from my experience because of the possible nerve involvement the preferred treatment pathway is physiotherapy. Worth getting checked out though to avoid the possibility of difficult problems at a later date. Hope you feel better soon, Lyn x

Thanks very much for your helpful link Lyn. I saw my GP yesterday and she confirmed too that the R.A is causing immense inflammation in my lumber spine. She has requested an emergency x-ray for me and trying to get an appointment brought forward with my rheumatologist.
I already have lots of damage in the cervical area of my spine, I think my lumber area was the only area in my entire skeleton that hasn't been munched by this horrible disease. This disease is becoming too greedy!!!

Ive got an MRI coming up for my neck as the X-ray showed some changes. Ra isn't that common in the spine but it's horrid in there My lower spine is stuck together a bit and the gaps are narrowed. Thats caused a lot of the standing problems but the left side of the sacroiliac joint goes max pain in a flair. I did find ice packs help. how to be a velvet bulldoser

Me again! Years ago back surgery was very hit and miss but is much more positive today. In Southampton they are pioneering a lot of very positive techniques and I met a few ladies post op when I had my knee done. One had Concrete poured in and was out the following day. how to be a velvet bulldoser

Thanks Jenni for your messages, I do find ice packs help with the burning searing pain. It's a bit more hopeful to hear that spine surgery is becoming more successful.

No I haven't had an MRI, I will have to ask my rheumy next month.
Just had my x-ray result back of my lumber spine, as I expected, there is some degeneration, but GP says it's not from the Rheumatoid, just wear and tear!!! Is that possible in a 42 year old who has spent most of the past 10 years wheelchair bound? I still think it's the Rheumatoid, I will need another opinion from my specialist next month.
Looks like every part of my skeleton is now knackered, just need a back surgeon now to complete the whole set of surgeons I am listed with!!
